Comments from Dr. Kinser
"As you may have guessed, I love books with good
CD-ROMs. This book has complete scripts for a web shop, a form handler,
feedback forms, seeking files, page control, and ways to restrict access.
Each script is clearly explained piece by piece, and instructions are given on
how to adapt the script to your own use. I also like learning a tool by
using that tool, and this cookbook gives you that resource. If you are
using forms, you need to learn CGI/Perl. Front Page just can't do all the
things that writing your own script can do."

Comments from Dr. Kinser
"Castro has done it again with simple explanations
of complex topics using screen shots and code examples. The size
of the code print is a little small for my 60 year old eyes, but I
still found it very useful. No CD-ROM, but at this price, who
cares!"

Comments from Dr. Kinser
"An excellent book for advanced programmers ready
to tackle the development of CGI applications for database access and
other object-oriented Perl programming. Good script examples,
with samples on the CD-ROM. Some of the CGI security content is
somewhat out-of-date, but that is a small matter for a text that is so
rich in other ways. A good book to have if you want to do CGI/Perl
programming. The cover says you can get updates via Sams web site, but
I haven't tried that. The CD-ROM contains CPAN (the comprehensive Perl
Archive Network) which has more than I can ever work my way
through."

Comments from Dr. Kinser
"Although there is no discount on this book, and
it is in need of a more recent edition, it still is worth looking for
on the discount shelf at Waldenbooks, or at a book warehouse.
The script examples are excellent and Herrmann's explanations are
clear. This book really helped me when I first started to work
with CGI/Perl scripts. Also has a good CD-ROM to save your
fingers from having to type all that code. Herrman has you jump
right in and work with the scripts and see how they run. I like
his style. Find this book if you can, or go ahead and plunk down
40 bucks -- there must be copies floating around somewhere."

Comments from Dr. Kinser
"Now we start making Bill Gates happy, because we
are looking at how best to do server side web development. As
the back cover says, 'This advanced guide for professional Internet
developers covers all the major aspects of Microsoft ASP architecture
-- from the five internal objects to creating your own external Active
Server components with VB5 and VC++....' The CD-ROM contains all
the source code from the book, and you will need it. This is
where web development gets complex. But there are good tools to
help make it easier. In HTML and CGI/Perl and JavaScript, I like
to write my own code, or adapt scripts available free on the
web. However, when you get into serious database management and
complex intranet applications, bring out the tools that help write the
script. This book is a good intro to the process -- but still it
is for more advanced programmers."
